How do the testing provisions of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act affect special education students?

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) requires that schools be accountable for the education of all of their students, including students with disabilities. Under this law, students with disabilities may be assessed by:

  • General state assessment
  • General state assessment with appropriate accommodations
  • Alternate assessment based on grade-level academic achievement standards
  • Alternate assessment based on modified academic achievement standards
  • Alternate assessment based on alternate academic achievement standards
